The OFWC Program Committee objectives are to continue the Outstanding Program Contest and to provide suggestions to assist clubs in the development of stimulating and/or entertaining programs which will make your members want to come to a club meeting, as well as attract new members.

PROGRAM SUGGESTIONS

  • Peruse the 2006-2008 GFWC Manual that each club president received where you can get many ideas for programs that are applicable to your community and club.  It is a veritable buffet of ideas!
  • Look around your community for other organizations that could provide speakers of interest for your club.  You may just stumble on a need that could turn into a joint project with another group.
  • Invite school musical groups, drama groups, adult musical groups, HOBY ambassadors, AFS students, etc. to speak to or entertain your club.
  • Learn about special needs children and adults with learning disabilities; autism, Downs, physically and mentally challenged – again you may develop a project from a program on these topics.  Invite a learning disabilities teacher or a teacher of the special needs children in your school system to speak to your club.

  • Invite an accountant, financial planner, a representative from your local bank, IRS or Social Security office to present timely, updated information appropriate to the age of your members.
  • Be your own program – share high school yearbooks, wedding albums, “guess the baby” pictures.  This makes for a really FUN meeting (especially on a cold winter night)!
  • Educate your members against becoming victims of crime, especially identity theft.
  • Invite a local veteran or a returning veteran to speak at your meeting.
  • If you have a Ronald McDonald House in your area, invite a speaker who could then lead to a project.

  • Investigate programs on retirement, bankruptcy, hidden credit card charges, investing or college funding (again, depending on the age of your membership).
  • Contact your local Red Cross for programs on disaster preparedness, first aide, fire safety, etc.
  • Spend a meeting to take a good look at your club – are you serving your members and your community?  Include a look at your bylaws, leadership opportunities, and member's talents.  Give a program on “What Does it Take to Be in Charge?”
  • Have a speaker from a women’s shelter, a victim’s assistance organization or area law enforcement agency.
  • Provide a skill-building/development workshop, including conflict resolution, risk taking, the art of getting along and working with people; public speaking, parliamentary procedure (and whatever else your club needs).
  • Contact the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, National Guard Unit, etc and ask a member to speak at your meeting.

OUTSTANDING PROGRAM CONTEST JUDGING CRITERIA

1.  Did the program promote member interest and enthusiasm?

2.  Was the program a creative or innovative approach to GFWC or OFWC department/committee goals?

3.  Was the program fun and entertaining or was it thought provoking, educational or serious, wherein it provided worthwhile or new information to members?

4.  Did the program provide a community service (if open to the public)?

OUTSTANDING PROGRAM CONTEST RULES

1. There are two (2) categories in the OUTSTANDING PROGRAM CONTEST:

            a.  Entertaining (a fun program)

            b.  Educational (an informative program)

2. There shall be no more than one entry per club, in each category, of a program presented at a regular club meeting during the previous calendar year (January – December).

3. Describe the program in five hundred (500) words or less

4. Entries should be typed, double-spaced on plain paper. Entering this contest will require a separate entry specifically for this contest. The Program Narrative Reports are to be used in the various department divisions and committees and will not be used for this judging. Write a separate entry for each category; i.e., one for the Entertaining Program and one for the Educational Program if club chooses to enter both categories. Clubs do not have to complete the reporting pages to enter this contest, they just need to write and submit an entry.

5. Include a copy of the page in club yearbook where program is listed.  Copies of publicity or photos may accompany the entry (no more than five articles and/or photos).

6. Club entries must be sent to the District Program Chairman, postmarked by February1, 2007 and February 1, 2008.  (See OFWC Directory for District Chairmen information).

7. There shall be one winner from a Junior Club, a Juniorette Club,  and one winner from a General Club in each membership category, for each program category, in each district.

8. District Chairmen shall send their winning Junior Club, a Juniorette Club, and General Club entries in each membership category for each program category to the State Program Chairman, postmarked by March 1, 2007 and March 1, 2008.  Include the copy of the page from the club yearbook as well as any publicity or photos (no more than five articles and/or photos) that were submitted by the club.

9. An Outstanding Program Certificate shall be awarded to the Junior Clubs, the Juniorette Clubs, and General Clubs in each membership category, for each program category at the 2007 and 2008 OFWC Conventions.
