President’s Special Emphasis:
Give a book, share a book, and help your libraries
Chairman:
Barbara Whitaker
The
theme for the 2010-2012 GFWC/Ohio President’s Special Emphasis is Give a book, share a book, and help your
libraries. Through programs and projects in this area clubwomen can assist
their community with educational and literacy issues and with support of
libraries.
- Encourage
members to join GFWC/Epsilon Sigma Omicron (ESO). If the club does not have an ESO reading
group, form one, or reactivate a former group.
- Donate
large print books, dictate or type Braille books for the sight impaired.
- Assist
with the book mobile or delivery of books to those in nursing facilities
or shut-ins.
- Hold
events at the library with the public invited. Club meetings may also be held at the
library. Invite authors as
speakers, hold craft sessions, encourage the use of the library.
- Donate
books to local shelters, assisted living facilities, or military facility.
- Hold
a fundraiser with the proceeds to support a local library.
- Support
the Ohioana Library, The State Library of Ohio.
- Have
an event at a library or book store inviting local authors to
participate. Distribute small
notebooks or bookmarks with club information. Invite an author to present a program at
a club meeting. Use this as an
opportunity to publicize the club, the joy of reading and the library.
- Observe
Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Hold a reading
event with children at a school or library.
- Present
speakers, guests and members with gifts of books, bookmarks or other
book-related items. Use books as
centerpieces and favors.
- Hold
book exchanges within your club.
Give members incentives to read.
- Invite
readers (potential members) to attend a special meeting of your club
themed around books.
- Organize
a book fair or community book sale.
- Sponsor
a book-signing.
- Encourage
the establishment of home libraries and reading in the home.
- Support
legislation that benefits libraries.
- Host
a “How to Use the Library” program.
- Sponsor
a summer reading program within the club or with the library or a book
store.
- Observe
National Children’s Book Week the week before Thanksgiving.
- Drop
Everything and Read on April 12.
- Assist
the library with Library Card Sign-Up Month in September.
- Carpool
to a book event in another city.
- Organize
club meetings around book themes or have a book review at each meeting.
- Give
books to non-members with club information as a recruitment tool.
