GFWC Objective:
Educate members and others about
domestic violence and encourage citizen action to address multiple domestic
violence concerns.
GFWC/Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs Objective:
- To make our communities a safer place to live for
women, children and families who are victims of domestic violence.
- This not a new project for GFWC/Ohio Federation of
Women’s Clubs. We supported this worthwhile cause several years ago and
many clubs are still supporting this effort. If this cause is new to your club, now
is the time to step up to the responsibility of making Domestic Violence a
new club project.
What is Domestic Violence?
Domestic violence is a crime. It
is defined as a pattern of coercive tactics, which can include psychological
and emotional, social, financial, physical and sexual abuse, perpetrated by a
family or household member, a boyfriend or significant other, with the goal of
establishing or maintaining power and control over the victim. Domestic
violence can happen to anyone. Domestic violence can take many forms and can
happen occasionally or constantly.
Forms of Domestic Violence
- Psychological
and Emotional Abuse: Verbal abuse is a powerful tool. After a while the victim may start to
believe that they really are worthless.
- Social Abuse:
The victim is not permitted to have a social life or any social contacts.
- Financial Abuse:
The victim is financially dependent on the abuser even when they are also
earning a salary.
- Physical Abuse:
This is the most obvious form of Domestic Violence, which often times
may lead to the victim’s death.
- Sexual Abuse:
The victim may be forced to participate in sexual activity against her
will.
Ohio Club Women can make a difference and
here’s how:
- Call the police if you see or hear evidence of
domestic violence.
- Speak out publicly against domestic violence
- Purchase domestic violence fundraising stamps at the
post office
- Have a speaker on Domestic Violence at a club meeting
and invite others to attend.
- Wear a purple ribbon behind your GFWC membership pin.
- Donate prepaid phone cards to a local shelter.
- Ask your local library to create a bulletin board of
domestic violence materials.
- Collect and donate old cell phones.
- Plan a fundraiser to help support a local domestic
violence program or shelter
- Donate professional attire to shelters for women
seeking employment.
- Volunteer your time
- Support public officials who support ending domestic
violence.
- Be a friend
JUST
KNOWING THAT SOMEONE CARES CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE TO A VICTIM OF DOMESTIC
VIOLENCE.
