GFWC JUNIORS SPECIAL PROJECT - Advocates For Children

Chairman: Sandra Saluga

OBJECTIVE:  Encourage members to continue projects related to children and youth and become active advocates for children by working to protect children from harmful situations; encourage healthy lifestyles; and prevent substance abuse and youth suicide.

SPECIFIC PROJECT IDEAS:  Members are encouraged to promote the projects related to children set forth by GFWC, and to focus on three very important issues facing our youth today.

CHILD SAFETY ON THE INTERNET

Children receive many benefits from the online world, but they can also be targets of inappropriate material and exploitation.  They need supervision and common-sense advice on how their experiences in “cyberspace” can be happy, healthy and productive.

  • Provide a program or speaker to your membership on Child Internet Safety
  • Visit Child Safety on the Information Highway. Kids Rules for Online Safety and Guidelines for Parents. www.safekids.com
  • Investigate Internet Safety Education. Protect Kids from Online Predators. Learn about online safety and help group www.wiredsafety.org
  • Finding age appropriate websites for kids. Kids and the Internet www.commonsensemedia.org
  • When Do I Start Teaching My Child About Personal Safety www.netsmartz.org
  • Investigate the National Education Association’s www.BNetSavvy.org website for information on a newsletter for “tweens” about staying safer online.

CHILD ID FINGERPRINTING

It is important to raise the level of awareness of child safety and provide parents with proactive measures to keep their children safe.  Every 40 seconds a child is reported missing, lost or separated from their parents.  Child abduction is on the rise and abductors are very cunning in their ability to lure children or find them when they may be vulnerable or alone.  Children need to be fingerprinted.   With a recent photo, fingerprints and identification information, local law enforcement can instantly dispatch recovery efforts of the child.

Encourage Child Safety through Child Identification.

  • Work with local law enforcement to initiate Child ID Fingerprinting in your community
  • Visit www.FingerPrintAmerica.com to see how one company works.
  • Investigate www.kidsave.com.  KidSave provides child protection through a child

identification registry that securely archives a photo and key descriptive data of a child for rapid retrieval in an emergency.  This website provides information on missing children and abduction prevention, child safety tips, child identification cards, and kids fingerprint kits.

KIDS AND CANCER

Children should be educated to practice good Sun-Safe habits while they are young because overexposure to sun and ultraviolet radiation can cause serious health effects such as skin cancer, eye damage and weakening of the immune system.

Provide a program or speaker to your membership on the prevention of Skin Cancer

  • Visit SunWise website (www.epa.gov/sunwise) EPA has developed the SunWise School Program for grades K-8. The program aids educators in raising sun safety awareness and offers free materials such as videos, pamphlets and posters by calling 1-800-490-9198 or E-mailing ncepimal@one.net
  • Investigate children and cancer on the American Cancer Society website and for information on teens and smoking www.cancer.org
  • Centers for Disease Control website www.cdc.gov/chooseyourcover
  • Skin Cancer Prevention website www.keepkidshealthy.com
  • Observe May as Skin Cancer Awareness Month
