Objective:
Educate GFWC/OFWC Members and Communities about the importance of
literacy for all age groups. Motivate club members and the community at large
to take action to help wipe out illiteracy and promote independent learning for
all.
Goal:
Promote literacy at all levels & promote opportunities for
independent learning.
Adult Literacy:
Encourage those without high school diplomas to get their G.E.D.
Start or join an existing book club.
Youth Literacy:
Create youth reading and speaking contests. Participate in local school Right to Read
Week activities (usually held in the month of May)
Family Literacy: -Encourage family library time and
family read “alouds.”
Volunteer as a tutor in classrooms or after school
for students needing help
(If no program exists, start one)
Goal:
Promote Public, School and Personal Libraries
100% of club members have a library card & check
out books weekly
Volunteer at public or school libraries
Make monetary donations to local libraries
Volunteer to read for classrooms or public library
story hours
Join groups that promote local libraries
Donate books to School & Public libraries in
honor and memory of loved ones
Share books & magazines--Have a book exchange

EDUCATION COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM –
PARTNERSHIP
The GFWC Education
Community Service Program – Partnership joins forces with national
organizations to form a working relationship to improve literacy, community-
and self-enrichment, and to become forces for educational change. Partners with GFWC operate at the national or
international level and have programs developed specially for GFWC clubs. Emphasized this administration is GFWC/Epsilon Sigma Omicron (ESO), Mentoring
Clubs are encouraged to
continue working with the GFWC Resource Organizations from previous
administrations, as they have longstanding national relationships with the
General Federation of Women’s Clubs (not only GFWC/
Book Adventure

Book Adventure is a FREE reading motivation
program for children in grades K-8. Children create their own book lists from
over 7,000 recommended titles, take multiple choice quizzes on the books
they've read, and earn points and prizes for their literary successes. Book
Adventure was created by and is maintained by Sylvan Learning.
The Dictionary Project,

The goal of this program is to assist all
students in completing the school year as good writers, active readers and
creative thinkers by providing students with their own personal dictionary. The
dictionaries are a gift to each third-grade student to use at school and at
home for years to come.
The ED Pubs web site is intended to help
identify and order U.S. Department of Education products. All publications are
provided at no cost to the general public by the U.S. Department of Education.
ED Pubs offers more than 6,000 titles. The site offers convenient, helpful
access to a wealth of free financial aid publications and application tools
that explain Federal Student Aid programs.
National Institute for
Literacy (NIFL),
The National Institute for Literacy, a
federal agency, provides leadership on literacy issues, including the
improvement of reading instruction for children, youth, and adults. The National Institute for Literacy develops
publications for families and educators of learners across the lifespan. The Institute encourages the development and
provision of high quality adult education and literacy services.

our country of its obligations to children and provides parents and families
with a powerful voice to speak on behalf of every child while providing the
best tools for parents to help their children be successful students.
PTO Today:
PTO Today is the only company dedicated

entire K-8 school parent group market. Regardless of the acronym (PTO or PTA,
