Objective:  Educate GFWC/OFWC Members and Communities about the importance of literacy for all age groups. Motivate club members and the community at large to take action to help wipe out illiteracy and promote independent learning for all.

 

Goal:  Promote literacy at all levels & promote opportunities for independent learning.

                Adult Literacy:  Encourage those without high school diplomas to get their G.E.D.

                                Start or join an existing book club.

                Youth Literacy:  Create youth reading and speaking contests. Participate in local school Right to Read Week activities (usually held in the month of May)

                Family Literacy: -Encourage family library time and family read “alouds.”

                Volunteer as a tutor in classrooms or after school for students needing help

                                (If no program exists, start one)

 

Goal:  Promote Public, School and Personal Libraries

                100% of club members have a library card & check out books weekly

                Volunteer at public or school libraries

                Make monetary donations to local libraries

                Volunteer to read for classrooms or public library story hours

                Join groups that promote local libraries

                Donate books to School & Public libraries in honor and memory of loved ones

                Share books & magazines--Have a book exchange

 

Goal:  Promote Independent & Higher learning for all age groups

                Volunteer for Summer Reading Programs and Learning Camps of youth

                Provide Club scholarships for Youth and/or Adults

                Promote the OFWC Scholarships

                Donate to the OFWC Scholarship Funds

 

Goal:  Be aware of and Celebrate monthly educational themes

                January:  Lifelong Literacy in America Month

                February:  Library Lovers Month

                March:  Read Across America Month—March 2 is Read across America Day

                April:  National Library Week (second week in April)

                May:  Children’s Book Week (first full week in May) also, Teacher Appreciation Week

                September:  Library Card Sign-up Month & Sept. 8, International Literacy Day

                October:  National Book Month –also, (second full week) Teen Read Week

                Nov.:  Nov. 1, National Author’s Day, National Education Week (second full week)

EDUCATION COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM – PARTNERSHIP 

 

The GFWC Education Community Service Program – Partnership joins forces with national organizations to form a working relationship to improve literacy, community- and self-enrichment, and to become forces for educational change.  Partners with GFWC operate at the national or international level and have programs developed specially for GFWC clubs.  Emphasized this administration is GFWC/Epsilon Sigma Omicron (ESO), Mentoring USA, American Library Association and Reading Rockets.  Information about these and other GFWC National Partners may be found in the GFWC Education Community Service Program pages in the GFWC Club Manual.

 

Clubs are encouraged to continue working with the GFWC Resource Organizations from previous administrations, as they have longstanding national relationships with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (not only GFWC/ Ohio relationships).  The GFWC Resource Organizations include, but are not limited to, those listed in the GFWC 2010-2012 Manual.      Book Adventure is a FREE reading motivation program for children in grades K-8. Children create their own book lists from over 7,000 recommended titles, take multiple choice quizzes on the books they've read, and earn points and prizes for their literary successes. Book Adventure was created by and is maintained by Sylvan Learning.

     The goal of this program is to assist all students in completing the school year as good writers, active readers and creative thinkers by providing students with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each third-grade student to use at school and at home for years to come.

     The National Institute for Literacy, a federal agency, provides leadership on literacy issues, including the improvement of reading instruction for children, youth, and adults.  The National Institute for Literacy develops publications for families and educators of learners across the lifespan.  The Institute encourages the development and provision of high quality adult education and literacy services.
